Youth Sports Specialization - How Old is "Too Young"?

Modern parenting faces unique challenges from convenience foods to internet safety and keeping kids active athletically. Sports medicine physicians at Bluetail are seeing an alarming rise in overuse injuries in younger athletes.

A Growing Concern

We're now treating young athletes for injuries typically seen in adults and diagnosing injuries previously only seen in professional athletes. The culprit? Early sports specialization — the practice of having children focus on a single sport year-round at increasingly young ages.

While parents often believe that early specialization gives their child a competitive advantage, research consistently shows the opposite. Children who specialize in a single sport too early are at higher risk for overuse injuries, burnout, and actually dropping out of sports entirely.

Our Recommendation

We recommend that children participate in multiple sports through at least their early teenage years. Multi-sport participation develops a broader range of athletic skills, reduces the risk of overuse injuries, and keeps young athletes engaged and enjoying their athletic experience.

If your young athlete is experiencing pain or injury related to sports participation, early evaluation and treatment can prevent more serious problems down the road.
